End Of The Month Already

You gotta be kidding us.

January ends at midnight tonight?

We are still writing out checks and dating them 2011.

We're totally lying.

Even if we did pay our bills, we wouldn't write out a check.

What are we... old people?

Just kidding, old folks.

And not only is it the 31st, it is like 50 degrees out there today.

We still haven't had to pack up our jean-shorts for the winter.

Thank god, cause we have great legs.

We should apologize for not having anything of substance to talk
about today.

We could talk about the bank robbery, but there is really no news,
other than the fact that it happened.

Let's hope that they catch em, and we'll tell you all about it.

More Beer Talk

We talk a lot about beer around here.

Usually we speak of delicious Ales, IPAs, Pilsners, Stouts, Lagers and how
many we tried to consume in one sitting.

Generally that number is rather impressive.

Speaking of which, here is a picture from Tuesday night (Beer Can
Appreciation Day) at the Blind Pig.

We made ourselves proud that night.

But the beer we are talking about today is an entirely different brew.

This is Birch Beer.
Similar to Root Beer.

Why the hell are we talking about Birch Beer?

Because, one of the top lines of Birch Beer in the world will be
produced right here in the Newk.

Local company Castle Co-Packers, LLC (Castle), will be the
newest production and supply partner for Boylan Bottling Company (Boylan).

These "super premium sodas" served in 12 ounce glass bottles are
quite popular, and demand along the East Coast is growing.

We consider this big news around here.

And we assume the local paper will pick up on this sometime soon.

Maybe after they read about it here?

Let's see...

Say Cheese

Big Brother is coming.

No, not our favorite reality show.

We are talking about the eyes in the sky.

Bids are being submitted to install a wireless 29-camera surveillance
system, from Tarentum to Sharpsburg.

The DA received nearly $300,000 for this system, from a few different
agencies.

One being the Department of Homeland Security.

These will be installed on a bunch of bridges heading down the
Allegheny.

Some of them being:

62nd Street
Highland Park
Hulton (pfffftt)

As well as our own Tarentum Bridge and Ninth St. bridge.
(Cameras on both sides of both bridges)

Some big intersections (Fox Chapel being one of them) will
also get some camera action.

And all over route 28.

We think this is a good idea.

This technology was used to help capture the guy that raped those
women in Ross Township.

Some of these cameras will be able to zoom in on license plates.
(Tarentum Bridge)

Police will be able to access these via laptop, due to the web-access
these things offer.

So make sure you are all glammed-up by Fall, because that is
the planned time frame to be up and running.

We Are Down With Dad

Many of our readers that also frequent the facebook, will likely
be familiar with the gentleman we are about to introduce.

We spoke briefly to the 2 guys behind Pittsburgh Dad, and told
them we'd share a couple of our favorite "episodes."

Pittsburgh Dad is a series of youtube videos that seem to remind
most of us about our own father.

These guys did it as a way to make their own families laugh.

And now have over 1,000,000 views.

Not too shabby.

As fellow internet sensations, we feel a deep bond with Curt and Chris.

The first video we will show, is the original "meet" episode.

The next two are a couple of our personal faves.

So grab some popcorn, and get ready for a chuckle...

We Heart Beer

Today is a big day.

Like, a really BIG DAY.

It isn't a day many of you were aware of.

Truthfully, we weren't aware of it all that long ago.

But, January 24th will forever hold a special place in the cockles
of our collective hearts (and bellies).

Because today is Beer Can Appreciation Day.
Yep, 77 years ago today, the first beer in a can was ever sold.

That day the world changed.

Not only are beers cans fun to stomp on once they have been emptied.
(Our personal favorite post-beer activity.)

They offer many other great traits, such as...

- Fully eliminates damage due to light and ingressed oxygen.
- Lightweight- reduces carbon footprint of shipping beer.
- Portable and unbreakable – Cans go where glass can’t.
- Recyclable – Cans are easier and more frequently recycled.

So what better way to celebrate, than to crack a "couple" 12-ouncers
this evening at your favorite pub right here in the birthplace
of aluminum?

That is what we plan on doing.

And here is a hint on where we'll likely end up tonight:

The swine can't see.

Just look for our whip out front...

To The Curb

The mayor's office contacted us the other day, with some very
important information.

No, they haven't removed the traffic light at Fifth and 9th.

Damn it.

They wanted all of our readers to know that the garbage will
still be picked up on Friday this week.

That's right, kids.

There will be no garbage delay even though we had a holiday
this past Monday.

So be sure to get your trash to the curb by tomorrow morning.

Because even though your trash stinks less in the wintertime, we don't
want to look at you bags on the curb for the next 7 days.

Big Savings

The recent improvement in the bond market is to thank
for the New Ken/Arnold school district's future savings of
$1.8 million dollars.

Yeah, you read that right...

$1.8 Million

How are they saving that much money?

The school board agreed to refinance nearly $20 million in bonds
taken out back in '95.

Honestly, we really don't know how this all works.

Hell, we're lucky we graduated.

But we are happy to see our district saving a few bucks.

Maybe this will help free up some money for more gym classes
or something?

Wanna Play?

Being that we are internet gods, it is part of our godly
duties to pay attention to trends and new ideas.

One new thing we've discovered is a great new social game.
No, not the Tour de Franzia.

This one is called "The Phone Stack."

It helps end one of the worst new social trends in the world.

No, not Fart Huffing.

It helps put an end to people constantly talking/typing/twittering
while at dinner or drinks with friends.

Here is how the game works.

Step 1: Everyone at the table orders.
2: All phones are stacked (face down) on the table.
3: First person to crack and check their phone is the loser.
4: The loser gets to pay the bill/tab.
5: If nobody cracks, everyone pays their own share as usual.

You could even do it at home with your family.

Loser does dishes?

Hell, just mentioning the game when out with people, might be
enough to get your point across?

Either way, this game needed to be taught to our Newk brethren.

Take this information and do what you will with it.

Bad News Booze

First off... happy Friday the 13th.

Okay,enough of that.

Down to business...

We received some terrible news yesterday.

No, we're not losing our jobs or anything.

But this is equally as life changing.

And if you haven't heard already, be sure you are sitting down...

The price of alcohol is going up.

Aggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!

We know.

It's horrible.

Take a moment to catch your breath.

Is your liver still with us?

Yeah, starting next month, some bottles will jump in price anywhere
from 20 cents to $5.

Like Vladimir.

Jumping two dimes to $7.59 for a liter.

Not bad, for you lower shelf sippers.

But for folks with finer tastes, things are jumping a bit higher.

Like Jameson.

Jumping 5-clips to $44.99 a bottle.

Some increases aren't so bad.

But when we heard that boxes of our beloved Franzia will be taking
a bigger chunk out of our pockets, we almost rioted.

Hopefully this doesn't effect our weekly Tour de Franzia.

-

Be careful in that snow and cold today and this weekend.

Nic is worried about all of you.

Godspeed, Gary.

Yeah, We're A-Listers Now

After our stint on the front page of the VND, we are now a
good bit more popular than we were a week ago.

If that is even possible?

So it comes as no surprise that we got invited to a taste-testing
of Ron Jeremy's new rum tonight @ Executive Cigars in Pgh.

It is hosted by our good friends at guymanningham.com.

These guys cover everything from rum to beer.

Maybe those things really aren't that far apart?

Truthfully, they cover all kinds of stuff.

If you like us, you will like them.

So check em out, eh?

Anywho, we are gonna try and make it out tonight for the taste testing.

If you don't have anything amazing going on, maybe you should join us?

Here are the deets:

We will be hosting a rum tasting at Executive Cigars (630 Suismon St. Pittsburgh, PA) Thursday, January 12th (8:30-10pm). Come and try Ron Jeremy's new line of rum at no charge! Cigars purchased during the event hours will be 15% off! Photos from the event will be in the review article of Ron de Jeremy - The Adult Rum.

You remember us talking about the Hedgehog's new rum, right?

Here is the LINK.

Join us tonight.

It should be a hoot.

Ironically, We Made The Front Page

Well, it was a story about the youtube video we featured
last week.

But we did get some props for posting it first, or as they put it...

"Ironically, the NewK Blog posted some of his videos on its site shortly after a wreck."

Ironic or not, we appreciate the mention.
(On the front page, as well as the Valley website.)

Well played, Chuck Biedka.

And you too, Mr. Kevin Churik.

We are glad the word is getting out about this dangerous passage.

Here are some screen shots of the press we received...

Once Again We Lead The Pack

A week ago, a reader of ours sent us an email and a link to
their video about the intersection at Taco Bell and BP.

To be honest, he sent the video a good while before last week,
but we had some end of the year things to post before 2012.

We posted it a week ago today.

The day after, we told you about a bad accident at that very intersection.

Then yesterday, we saw a piece on this on the 5 o'clock news on
channel 11.

Here are some top notch pictures we took from our couch...

At the end of the news story, they claimed more info will be available
in our local new paper on Tuesday.

Not only did we help break this story, we did it 7 days before
WPXI News, and the vnd.

This doesn't come as a surprise to us, as we've noticed many times
in the past that people scour our site for local news.

We aren't mad about it.

Hell, we are quite proud of it.

Now, it is very possible (or even likely), that the gentleman that sent
us the email also sent those news outlets the same email.

But the hits the video likely received the days following our post
may have had something to do with the others picking it up.

Whatevs.

We only watch the news to see Darieth Chisolm.

Hubba hubba.

We Hate Being Right

This past Tuesday, we shared a video about the intersection
at Taco Bell/BP.

It showed people running the light there, after it had well
turned red.

Then yesterday, we got a text saying someone got T-boned
at that very intersection.

It was around 4:30pm or so when it happened.

So it really made rush hour even worse.

We were heading that way near 5pm, but turned off before we had
to deal with what looked like terrible traffic.

But we tried to snap a picture.

Here is our attempt.

Not great.

But it'll do.

We seriously hope everyone involved is okay.

New Year, New Place To Shop

Forgive us.

We are trying to clean up some business that we had to put

But this one needs your attention.

Some folks have opened up a really cool shop in the downtown area.

And we want to pass along the email we got from them last month...

Hey NEWK blog folks, just wanted to send along our press release from a week ago....we love the blog! Email us with any questions!

New Year, Old Issue

As some of you may remember, we have a huge issue with the
traffic light at the corner of Fifth Ave/9th St.

It is insane that there isn't a stop sign there instead.

But that is not what this post is about.

This is about another intersection in the Newk.

Editor's Note:
We misspelled intersection in that last sentence.
We left the s out.
It said "interection."
We almost left it, as we are quite amused by that sort of stuff.

We got an email a week or so ago.

Would you be so kind in posting this on the facebook page? I am trying to spread the word and raise awareness...

We watched the video, and even though one of those cars may
have been us, we agreed to post this.

Now, we know that this type of behavior happens at many large
intersections, especially when people are trying to get to work.

But if calling attention to this ends up stopping a potential tragedy
in this town, we are all for it.
