Please be safe, and don't blow any fingers off.

Oh, and have fun.

Block Rockin' Beats

Just in case you haven't seen these signs around town, this Saturday
is the (what has become) annual Fireworks Block Party.

Games
Food
Music
Friends
and of course

FIREWORKS!!!

This party is always a good time.

So make sure to head down to Fourth Ave this Saturday evening.

And tell em', theNewk sent ya.

Booze Makes Us Fuzzy

We were at the liquor store the other day.

Can you believe it?

And we noticed that one of our favorite old-school golfers will be
in town promoting his vodka.

Today he will be at the Fox Chapel store (which is his closest stop to the Newk).

Sure, this isn't the most important news we've ever reported.

But any man that poses like that in a promotional picture, deserves at least a
little of our attention.

A Challenger Appears

If you've ever actually read this site, you would know the many reasons
we attend New Ken Community Days.

The biggest one is to support and say thank you to our local
Firemen and women that put this great event on for everyone.

Well done, all of you on another great year!

Our second biggest reason is the food.

In particular, funnel cakes.

Damn, we love some funnel cakes.

But something happened this year as we browsed the menu at the
ticket counter.

We remembered something a great man once said.

We believe it was Hugh Hefner, but we could be wrong...

"Variety is the spice of life."

He also said little gems like...

"I love boobies."
and
"You two get on the bed and do stuff."

But it was the variety one that we thought of at this particular moment in time.

So we stepped out of our comfort zone, and threw caution to the wind.

Here is what we went with...

That's right, folks.

A Belgian Waffle w/ice cream, whipped cream, strawberries and chocolate syrup.

And of course, our yearly allowance of lil' hugs.

And we were not disappointed.

For the low low price of 10 tickets ($5), we scored this little gem of a meal.

It was perfectly balanced, with all of the terrible things we love.

If the waffle cart is there next year, you'll know where to find us.

What was your favorite highlight?

Commuity Days Week (Friday)

We are totally tailgating Community Days today.

We have our...

Camp Chairs
Pop-up Canopy
Cooler
Ice
Brew
Mini-Grill
Cheap hotdogs from Community Market
Sunscreen
and
a Porta-John

That's right, we rock our own whizzer.

That's how we roll.

We are set up for an all-day chillout.

And even got some pre-sale tix for opening night.

So if you are there when the gates open at 5pm, get out of our way.

Because the first funnel cake is all ours.

See you there.

And spend some money.

Especially on food.

We sure will.

Community Days Week (Thursday)

Tomorrow, the gates will open on the 21st New Ken Community Days.

Everyone we talk to, has their favorite part about NKCD.

Many folks like the music.
Many folks like the crafts.
Many folks like seeing old friends.
And some folks even like the fake Gucci bags the best.

But we here at the Newk make our yearly journey to Memorial Park for
one reason, and one reason alone.

Yep, you know us too well...

Funnel Cakes and Lil' Hugs.

We don't care how many tickets it costs.

We are slaying a few cakes, and whatever hugs we can buy with the extras.

Speaking of the ticket deal.

We aren't really fans of the ticket situation.

But we understand it.

Things need to be kept track of.

If we didn't have anything to complain about, we likely wouldn't have a site.

Community Days Week (Wednesday)

Traffic Alert:

When heading to Community this weekend, be prepared for a little
extra NKCD anticipation.

Not only is Tarentum Bridge hell on earth, there is a good bit of construction
all the way from the Blind Pig (shout out), to past Memorial Park entrance.

Normally, the city blocks off a lane or two for foot and shuttle bus traffic, but
we aren't quite sure what their plan is this year for moving people in and out.

We're sure it will all work out.

It always does.

And don't worry.

There will be funnel cakes when you get there.

New Ken Community Days Week (Tuesday)

Obviously, after reading the title of this post, you are well aware that this
week is a big one here in the Newk.

Every year, the fire departments of New Ken put on Community Days.

It's filled with...

Crafts
Music
Friends
Games
Food
Bingo
and
A Strong Sense of Community.

It is by far the biggest fund raiser for our volunteer firemen.

And they earn every cent.

They've been hard at work getting every last detail ironed-out.

All they ask of you, is to head down to Memorial Park, enjoy yourself, and get
home safely.

Hey, Dad

We know that your total lack of caring for this alternate
universe known as "the interwebs" will likely prevent
you from ever reading this, but we'd still like to say...

We wouldn't be who we are without you.
Happy Father's Day, Dad.

Love ya, man.

The Single Lane

When your morning carpool conversation has questions like...

"What are these flat-looking road cone things called?"

And you get answers like...

"I don't give a $h!t what they're called, why the eff are they all over the bridge?"

You know that construction season is in full effect.

And any of you that use the Tarentum Bridge as a path to get to your
place of business, you already know what we're talking about.

It seems some work is being done across the river.

So they decided that instead of having everyone bottleneck on the
Tarentum side, they would have morning traffic be gridlock well past
the Taco Bell intersection.

It's probably the best plan of attack.

But it surely doesn't seem that way as we sip
our morning java, while trying to remember if we put deodorant on
before we left the house.

Just thinking about that jagoff that always flies up past all the non-A-Hole
humans in line, and squeezes in, as if where he has to be is 50 times
more important than where we have to be, well...

It chaps our ass.

Speaking of awesome sayings like "chaps my ass," we are reminded of
our dad.

And this weekend is Father's Day.

Yippee!
We have something to write about tomorrow!

Bear Witness To This Email

We got an email the other day.

We love emails.

But we love emails with pictures in them even more.

Now, we've gotten many different kinds of pictures sent to our email account.

Many. Different. Kinds.

If you know what we're saying.

But this one was particularly interesting.

It was taken in the Rossmont section of town...

Yep, that's a big ass bear.

Chillin' in Rossmont.

Just snacking on some birdseed.

Doing what Newk bears do.

Thanks so much for sending in this picture!

Keep em coming.

All of em.

;)

Joining Forces... Or Not

The combining of the the New Kensington, Arnold, Lower Burrell and
Upper Burrell police departments makes sense on many levels.

So why are they still seperate?

Is it because they strictly stay in their own areas, and never stray?

No, they back each other up on many occasions, and work together on
drug and drunken driving task forces.

Is it because it would cost the residents of each town extra money?

No, as it would likely save tax payers loads of cash in the long run.

Is it because combining forces is not allowed by the state?

Nope, because 35 consolidated forces already exist in Pa.

Is it because some communities try to distance themselves from neighboring
communities/towns?

Possibly.

At least that's what it looks like to us.

Look, we don't really know much about anything.

We haven't personally discussed this with anyone involved.

But we are rather good at reading between the lines.

And we think this is exactly what's happening around here.

Hell, we share the same zip code, why are Upper Burrell and Lower Burrell
so against this idea?

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure this riddle out.

And if you are from this area, you know how many Burrell residents
view New Ken/Arnold.

And in our opinion, the politicians of the cities against this merger, likely fear
the backlash of trying to unite them with us

It's rather petty and childish, if you ask us.
And no one has.

Hopefully, a study will be done, and people with think with their heads, and not
their hearts.

We have no reason to believe things will change.

But we can hope.

Happy Eddie Adams Day!

Today is Eddie Adams Day.

Who is Eddie Adams, you say?

Only one of the Newk's most famous residents ever.

Check out this Link

Yeah.

That's the Washington Post.

Now, tomorrow night is the event.

You should go.

No Home For You

A few times this year, council has turned down offers to purchase
run down homes in our area.

They decided that tearing down the homes was the best decision for the
city, and the neighbors on those streets.

We've told you about this before.

Not that long ago actually.

You may be asking yourself...

"Hey handsome, is it difficult to maintain your street-cred, now that your
local blog site has shot you on a starship to fame?"

Wait.

That is what we were asking ourselves.

Everyday.

You may be saying...

"Why are they writing about the same basic story that you wrote about
not that long ago?"

Because, we see this as a huge step in the future of this city.

We aren't just jumping at any chance to get a few bucks for a property
that is beyond repair.

We are NOT a sleazy used-car lot type of town.

People in charge are doing what is right for the city.

And we appreciate that.

We'll remember, come election time.

Will you?

Haulin' Lunkers

One of our favorite events takes place this weekend.

No, it's not the mother/daughter tag-team strip-off at our
home away from home... Teasers, in Kittanning.

It's the Annual Fishing Derby at Burrell Lake Park.

Registration ends at 9am, which is when the derby starts.

Fishing ends at 11am, and the prizes are awarded about a half hour after that.

Tons of prizes for biggest fish (each species).

Ages 15 and under are eligible to win.

They will have a few rods and such for kids that don't own one.

They will also have a mess of nightcrawlers for the rugrats to use.

I wish we were allowed to participate.

We noodle lunker cats out of BLP.

Run For The Mills

We recently spent a few hours shopping  up at Pittsburgh Mills.

We guess you can call it "shopping."

It felt more like walking and and saying "what store used to be there?"

We were really bummed out by this.

Only 7 years ago, there was so much buzz around here regarding the Mills.

It really is a pretty epic mall.

Why is it that many stores have closed their gate for good?

Sure, there are still some decent stores up there.

Especially in the food court area.

Where most store fronts are alive and well.

Well, maybe not so well

But there are wings that are like a modern day ghost town.

Instead of tumbleweeds, there are...

Bowling pins from Lucky Strike Lanes
Sheet sets from Linens N' Things
Costume jewelery from NY&Co.
Irish flags from the Flag World
and
Bounced rent checks signed by Chef Steff

The consensus around here is they made it too big.

Or maybe they should have had Best Buy, Ross and Michael's
move into the Galleria instead of the surrounding buildings?

Oh yeah, what ever happened to the water park plans?

Happy Holi-Glazed!

There is no post, as today is our favorite holiday...

National Donut Day!

We are obviously too busy celebrating.

So grab a creme filled, and join us!

And don't forget to pour out a sip of your 2% in
honor of your fallen homies.

Have a good weekend.
