Veterans Day (NEWK Style)

Happy Veterans Day everyone!

And yes, we spelled it correctly.

We looked into it.

Here is what the Veterans Day Wikipedia page says:

The holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements. While these spellings are grammatically acceptable, the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.

See, we actually do research around here.

They also taught us this...

It is also celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

So there you go.

You are officially smarter now, than you were 10 minutes ago.

Beer Farts And Bullets

So today is Tuesday, November 10th.

It is a day with many unique qualities.

It is the day after a huge Steeler victory on Monday Night Football.(So we understand if you are a bit hungover.)


It is the day that Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released
for all major video game systems.(So we understand if we don't have your full attention.)


And, if you are anything like us...

You are sitting at home in your underwear, nursing a beer headache,
dodging electronic bullets, all while eating a Raspberry Poptart.

Jealous?

Yeah, we thought so.


But more importantly than those things, today is the day before
Veterans Day.


And we wanted to make sure you were aware of tomorrow's parade.

New Kensington-Arnold Veterans Parade

Date: Wednesday, November 11th 2009
Starts: 9:30 am at Roosevelt Park in Arnold
Route: Follows 5th Ave toward New Ken
Ends: Gold Star Mother's Monument
(Across from People's Library)

From our experience with this parade in the past, they don't seem to
get the largest turnout.

We would like to help change that.

So we kindly ask you to put the game controller down for a
few minutes, and go support the men and women that fought
for our freedom.

It's the least we can do.

Side note:
If you are going, be sure to let us know where you'll be standing.
Maybe we'll swing on by and say hello.


And to all of you veterans reading this...

We would like to thank you, and your family, for your many sacrifices.

Your life was in many ways like this video game we are playing.
But much more real and terrifying.
(And without a reset button)

First Kisses and Sticky Floors

Another one bites the dust.

That's right kids, the Cheswick Theatre is officially closed.

There are many reasons for the closure.

- Lack of customers.
- Movie company taking 55 percent of the gross.
- Popcorn Flu
- Etc.

We will only have good memories this place.

How many of you reading this went on a date there?
How many of you put your arm around someone in those seats?
Maybe you got kissed for the first time?
Maybe you saw your favorite movie there for the first time?
It's possible you tried the old "hole in the popcorn bucket" trick?

Even if you never did those things.

We surely haven't.
(Hi, honey.)

But we vividly recall the excitement when the previews started to
flicker across that screen.

The sound pumped through your body like a freight train.

The Sno-caps and Sour Patch Kids made sweet love in your mouth.

We remember asking for extra butter.
We remember plans on keeping our ticket stubs forever.
We remember standing along Pittsburgh St., waiting for our ride.
We remember always wanting a movie poster, or a cardboard cutout.

There are so many good memories of that place throughout this area.

It really is a bummer that they had to close.

But I guess we are partly to blame.

I know that it's been years, since a few of us set foot
in that building.

Here is a picture we took a few months back, as we drove by...



It looks as though if you want to take in a flick on the big screen,
you are going to have to head up to the Pittsburgh Mills, and choose
one of their 18 screens to watch.

Or you can help the little guy, and head to the Oaks Theater in Oakmont.

Maybe you'll just stay home and watch a Blu-Ray on your gigantic
wall mounted television.

So yeah, we totally made some drastic design changes to the site.

And we are glad you like them.

We were starting to worry, as not one person has made a comment about it.

And seeing that we are more insecure than a pimple-faced 8th grader,
it was getting hard to fall asleep at night.And to answer your question about Wingapalooza...

We are not finished.

Just taking a breather of sorts.

We wish we had a better reason, like we actually cared about our figure.

But that's not the case.

We've actually had quite a bit going on, and our timing is terrible.

So, sit back and relax.

There are more wings to come.

We Feel Left Out

So tonight is the premier of the DVD called
"New Kensington Is..."

(7pm at Westmoreland County Community College's New Kensington Center)

It's a video that details how awesome New Kensington
was, back in the day.

Back when there were as many people on the streets at midnight,
as there were at noon.

To be honest.

It's pretty much that way today, but just the exact opposite.

They are looking to generate enthusiasm about New Ken's past,
and in turn generate enthusiasm for it's future.

And we are all for that.

Too bad we didn't get an invite to tonight's festivities.

(We're all Emo about it.)

If you as well got overlooked for the viewing, you will be able to purchase this dvd
for $10 at the New Kensington Chamber of Commerce on Fourth Ave.

We really can't wait to see it.

(The last thing we wanted to see this bad, was a pair of boobs, when we
were like 12 years old.)

To be honest, we still have strong yearnings to see breasts.

Can you blame us?
Those things are fascinating.

Back to the premiere, and why we wish we were invited.

We love seeing things before our friends.
We've never walked the red carpet.
We would look great on E!
We love popcorn and Sno-caps.

So there you have it.

If you are lucky enough to be on the guest list, please try and refrain
from sending us braggart emails about it.

We feel bad enough.

Elections and Our Phone

Since when is it okay for candidates to have automated services
call our house and bother us while we are having se... I mean, relaxing.

Seriously.

They are even calling during the weekend.

They are also banging on our door, and making our dog bark like crazy.

We've had enough.

C'mon now.

We've had more junk mail, and phone calls, and door knocking than
when there was a presidential race.

Sure it matters to us who is on the school board, and who becomes
a judge.

(Especially if Smails is running.)

But this is getting a little crazy.

Everywhere we look, we see those annoying roadside mini-billboards
with all the names just blurring into each other.

And we'll be honest with you.

We will not back any candidates (and don't think we haven't been asked), until
one of us decides to run for office.

We promise.

And you never know when that might happen.

We'd love to be a public servant.
(And actually get paid for it.)

Now you got us thinking.

Hmmm...

What are we qualified to do?

City blogger?

Yeah, write us in for that.
