It's Fishy

It's fishy to rock around, to rock around that's right on time, it's fishy. 

Fishy fishy fish, here we go... 

It is totally that time of year again. 

Fish fry here, fish fry there. 

Our personal favorite fish fry is held at the #4 firehall up on the coner of 7th St and Strawn. 

It starts next Wednesday. 

This is just a small preemptive post to whet your appetite.

We will post a full menu and list of days/times coming up soon.

Come And Get It

Two of our favorite things are food and emails. 

Yesterday, we got both in one! 

Woot.

There is a spaghetti dinner this Saturday, from 1pm to 8pm. 

It's just 7 bucks a person, and there will be cool stuff to do, other than just eat delicious vittles.

Events like this help our volunteer firepeople raise funds. 

So go eat. 

But not too much.  

These people aren't made of sausages and meatballs.

Should we allow you to try and figure out what the FF in today's title stands for, for a few more minutes?

but it's none of those. 

It stands for Fall Festival. 

The yearly festival is this Saturday, staring at 10am. 

As usual, there will be a bunch of good music. 

4 bands are set to rock your face off. 

There will also be tons of fun for the family. 

Including a play zone, entertainers and a pumpkin patch. 

They will also be doing the team bed races. 

This event gets pretty nuts. 

Teams of 5 people, decorate and modify a bed on wheels, then attempts to score the fastest time in the trials. 

If you would like to signs up a team, you can do it that day for $25. 

Not a bad price for some high-level competition.

Do Stuff

This upcoming Labor Day weekend is full of things to do to get you off of that butt of yours. 

The first one is the Labor United Celebration at Northmoreland Park. 

When: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Sunday and Monday

Admission: Free; free parking; $3 for all-day carnival rides

Where: Northmoreland Park, off Route 356, Allegheny Township

The Down-Low: They always have tons of food, a huge flea market, games, rides and music. 

theNewk Tip:  Make sure the trolly doesn't run you down in the parking section. 

Must Do:  Fries, from the NKFD. 

The next event is a bit more rockin. 

It's called A Concert For Anna. 

When: 8 p.m., doors open Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Admission: $8 each night

Where: Praha, 400 Corbet St., Tarentum 

The Down-Low:  A concert featuring great local bands for great local causes.  This year, is benefits a local family with a 3 year old son that has been diagnosed with autism.  A subject very close to our hearts.

theNewk Tip:  Get there early to get a good spot.  These concerts always pack em in.

Eat, Shop, Eat

Shopping and eating are two of our absolute favorite hobbies. 

And when we get lots of stuff (food and goods), for not a lot of cash, we go from 6 to Midnight. 

So you know that our shorts are getting a little bit tighter, as one of the biggest weekends in the Newk is nearly upon us. 

Yep, it's Mount Vernon yardsale weekend! 

And you know when the MVYs come around, so does the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the EKCC (right across from Martin Elementary). 

You can be sure, that we will load up on stacks of fluffy cakes, and link after link of juicy sausages before we make our way to wheel and deal on "The Hill." 

It doesn't even matter if we find any good deals up there, because we can always count on some top-notch vittles as we browse. 

We just aren't sure if we will get a dog from Frank's Franks first, or an original Char-Dog. 

But you know damn well we'll have at least one of each. 

As will many other shoppers. 

See, these two Newk weenie legends have been serving up casing-filled delights for many years now. 

And from what we understand, Frank's Franks may have been the first. 

Fact is, whoever came first is of no concern to us. 

What is a concern to us is the fact that they are both open for business this Saturday afternoon. 

Because once those EKCC pancakes start to wear off, we plan on having loads of wieners in our mouths. 

Hmmm. 

Maybe we should rethink that last sentence? 

Meh, we're comfortable with ourselves. 

Oh yeah, be sure to tell em "theNewk sent ya."

Block Rockin' Beats

Booze Makes Us Fuzzy

We were at the liquor store the other day. 

Can you believe it? 

And we noticed that one of our favorite old-school golfers will be 

in town promoting his vodka. 

Today he will be at the Fox Chapel store (which is his closest stop to the Newk). 

Sure, this isn't the most important news we've ever reported. 

But any man that poses like that in a promotional picture, deserves at least a 

little of our attention. 

New Ken Community Days Week (Tuesday)

Obviously, after reading the title of this post, you are well aware that this 

week is a big one here in the Newk. 

Every year, the fire departments of New Ken put on Community Days.

It's filled with... 

Crafts 

Music 

Friends 

Games 

Food 

Bingo

and 

A Strong Sense of Community. 

It is by far the biggest fund raiser for our volunteer firemen.

And they earn every cent. 

They've been hard at work getting every last detail ironed-out. 

All they ask of you, is to head down to Memorial Park, enjoy yourself, and get 

home safely. 

Sounds easy, eh?

Haulin' Lunkers

One of our favorite events takes place this weekend. 

No, it's not the mother/daughter tag-team strip-off at our 

home away from home... Teasers, in Kittanning.

It's the Annual Fishing Derby at Burrell Lake Park. 

Registration ends at 9am, which is when the derby starts. 

Fishing ends at 11am, and the prizes are awarded about a half hour after that. 

Tons of prizes for biggest fish (each species). 

Ages 15 and under are eligible to win. 

They will have a few rods and such for kids that don't own one. 

They will also have a mess of nightcrawlers for the rugrats to use. 

I wish we were allowed to participate. 

We noodle lunker cats out of BLP. 

 

Growing As A Community

We told you a little while back about a fine group of folks looking 

to make a positive difference in downtown New Kensington. 

Yeah, we did. 

Look it up. 

So anyways, we got an update email the other day, and it turns out 

this past Saturday was planting day on Fifth ave. 

Here is the Press release and a few really great pictures. 

We want you to not only enjoy the pictures and release, but let in the 

idea of people really making a difference around here. 

We couldn't be more proud that we were part of this movement.

 “The City of New Kensington, Westmoreland County Community College – New Kensington, local business owners  and community leaders  will be planting flowers and vegetables over the weekend on the initial phase of the New Kensington Community Garden. This cooperative project involves manually moving 20+ tons of topsoil into raised beds that will be utilized to raise heirloom vegetables in an urban environment. The vegetables grown and harvested from this educational/ revitalization project will be donated to local food banks. The garden is located on the 800 block of 5th Avenue in Downtown New Kensington on property owned by the City of New Kensington and the Redevelopment Authority of New Kensington.



All materials for this project were graciously donated by local businesses.

Mayor Tom Guzzo, City of New Kensington, and Kim McAfoose, Executive Director of the Redevelopment Authority  of New Kensington, have been instrumental in providing the leadership to successfully champion the project for the city.” 

The Parade Wants You

We are more than just a spot to read about all the important 

happenings in this area. 

You may also find the occasional penis and fart joke. 

One other thing you may find, is information on how to be a part 

of the new-look Newk. 

And here is a chance for you and your business or group, to get 

involved, and get some pretty good exposure as well. 

This Monday, some wonderful people are organizing the annual 

New Ken/Arnold Memorial Day Parade. 

They have open spots in the Parade, which starts at Sam's Pop and 

Beer Shop, travels down Fifth, and ends at the memorial by 

People's Library in the Newk.

Nothing Like Some Good Music

Today's post is gonna be simple. 

It's gonna be quick. 

And it's gonna give you something really fun to do on a Thursday evening. 

Tonight, at the Valley High Auditorium, you can be entertained by the 6th and 

7th grade bands. 

Jazz Bands. 

Concert Bands. 

The youth of our area. 

Why wouldn't you go? 

Hell, even if it's just to go into the auditorium for the first time since you 

graduated. 

We don't care what you reason. 

Our reason is to see our niece rock out. 

Calling All Duffers

There are very few things in this world, that cause us to stop acting 

like jagoffs, and get serious for a minute. 

That very thing happened when we got a phone call from one of our 

dearest friends. 

He told us the tragic story of a young man and woman that just had their 

first son, Luca. 

Not long after childbirth, Jennifer was diagnosed with cancer. 

They put together a benefit golf outing, and are having a tough time filling 

in some spots. 

It is coming soon, and looks to be one of the best outings of the season. 

We ask you to give your golf buddies a call, and tell them about this event.

The Votes Are In

We told you about the Pizza War going on at WCCC yesterday.

Well, the students have spoken...


In fact, 102 of them spoke.

Hopefully not with their mouths full of cheesy love.

And we're told that results were incredibly close for all 5 downtown
shops that entered.

But just like local blogging, there has to be a winner.

And since we don't know anything about making pizza,
we can only rule in the internet geekiness department.


Have we delayed long enough in telling you the winner yet?


Maybe?


Now, we don't know how the blind judging went.

Did they blindfold 102 students?

That sounds kinda dangerous to us.

Maybe they just had the pizza cut up on unlabeled plates?

Maybe they trusted the students to cover their own eyes while
they noshed on the vittles?


Whatever was decided to be the best method for pizza war
integrity, we're sure it was well executed.

New Ken/Arnold Pizza Wars 2012

We got a very nice email late last week from the fine folks
at WCCC New Kensington Campus.

They told us about an amazing event they had planned for
next week.

When we got the email, it was referring to this week.

And since we are already backtracking, and trying to make it sound
like we didn't totally screw the pooch and not mention this earlier...

The event is happening today.

And depending on when you are reading this, it may have already happened.

And a winner has likely been crowned.

But you not knowing about it until now, doesn't make it any less awesome.

The Westmoreland County Community College New Kensington Education Center will hold its first Pizza War to judge the best pizza in the New Kensington and Arnold area, at noon, Tuesday, February 28 at the center.



One hundred WCCC New Kensington Education Center students will serve as the impartial judges of the blind taste test. Participating eateries, all within walking distance of the center, include Egidio’s Pizzeria, Perry Di Pizzaman, Stella’s and Fox’s Pizza of New Kensington and P&M Pizza, Arnold.



The competition will recognize three winners with gold, silver and bronze awards, which will be determined by the number of students’ votes. Each winner will receive a banner to display at their business proclaiming their standing in the Pizza War.



WCCC New Kensington Center Coordinator Patrick Coulson, who organized the event, said, “We all have a vested interest in the success of New Kensington and Arnold and this is an excellent opportunity to support and showcase our local businesses.”

Copy that, Mr. Coulson.

We share those feelings for this city.

We also share your passion for good pizza.

We look forward to getting some results.

A local man is missing.

His name is Chad Evanuik.

This is his picture:
He was last seen wearing a brown leather jacket, and blue jeans.

He stands 6 foot 1 inch and has brown hair and eyes.

He drives a 1996 Black Dodge Avenger with a license plate
of FSN-5572.

He has not been seen at school, or anywhere for that matter
since Tuesday.

A very dear friend of ours reached out to us in hopes we could spread
the word about Chad.

He is not a drunk or a partier.

He is a good kid.

Here is a section of the email we received, and it says it all...

Nobody knows anything...all that’s known is that he’s missing.
Normal, responsible people just don’t disappear.

Even if you just think you may have seen him.

Fish Sandwich Spotlight

Being that Lent is starting today for you folks that follow that sort
of thing.

You are likely giving up things you like until Easter arrives.

We wish you luck in your venture.


For us, it's the start of Fish Sandwich Season.

And the #4 Fire Hall (near Martin School) is usually our first stop.

We've been eating their golden delicious sammiches for as many years
as we can remember.

They always have a nice array of sides as well.

But we are there for fish.

And lots of it.


They got a hold of us yesterday, to let us know they'd be open
from 3-7pm tomorrow.

If you are hungry, make sure and support your local volunteer firemen.



There are many local organizations doing this, so get out there and eat.

Never Too Soon

Sure, yesterday was Valentine's Day.

Sure, we still have a wine hangover.

Sure, it's never too soon to start planning for St. Patrick's Day.



And we are already in the mood.

Our good friends at the Blind Pig Saloon are also in the mood.

This Friday night they will be hosting The Great Guinness Toast
featuring Barbary Wine.

That's right, starting at 9pm the music will be flowing, and so will
the Guinness.

So put on some green, and head down to the Pig.

Food, drinks and good tunes.

You know we'll be there.

Probably doing a jig of some sort.
