Hot Days, Cool Treats?

We've recently been noticing that the Dairy Queen on
Freeport Rd. has not been opened yet.


And people are starting to ask questions.

Those people... are us.

So we decided to ask around a little bit at some of our most
trusted gossip spots.

Local bars.

By no means did we uncover the mystery of it remaining closed.

But we did enjoy a few cold beers, and some good laughs
with our bar buds.

A few people mentioned they heard it may be going
up for sale in the near future.

We will be happy as long as it reopens.

We all have so many good memories of this little slice of deliciousness.

Heading there with family.
Enjoying a post little league cone with our team.
Driving there the day we got our drivers license.
Cruising by and seeing who may be in line.
Practicing our order in the car, so we don't mess up at the window
and get yelled at for doing it wrong.


Well, whatever the reason for it still be boarded up is, we
hope the windows open up soon.

We could sure use a twist cone with chocolate jimmies.

Especially on a hot day like today.

Avett Day Is Here!

That's right.

Tonight on the North Shore.

We will be there.

We will then head over to the casino to check out our boy
DJ Frankie spinning tunes at the Drum Bar starting
at 9:30pm.

If you can't make the Avett show, you should at the very least
check out Frankie.

Get Your Spirit Ready

This Monday is the annual Memorial Day Parade
here in the Newk.

This really has become one of the great events each year
held in the downtown section of our beloved town.

Ceremony: 10:30 am Roosevelt Park, Arnold PA

Parade: 11:00 am Advance Down 5th Avenue

Ceremony Ends: Gold Star Mothers Monument
New Kensington-across from People's Library

*purchase a flag for $1.00 to wave during the parade at the
Mayor's Office at City Hall, the Tax Office at City Hall and
Chamber of Commerce. They will probably be selling them at the
parade also.

Proceeds benefit People's Library.

A few of you were wondering why we didn't make any mention
of Hines Ward winning that dancing show yesterday.

Here are a few reasons why.
(Some are real, some are not. You decide which is which.)

- Everyone on facebook was already talking about it.
- Sometimes we write the next day's post earlier than the prime-time
television time slots.
- We have no idea who Hines Ward is.
- We boycotted the finale, cause the Black Eyed Peas were on it.
- We were too drunk to remember.
- Our dog ate it.
- We aren't fans of the tap dancing.

Oops, that's the wrong dancing Hines.

Either way, congrats 86!

Come tumbling down.


Yep, the old Jerome-Costa building in Parnassus was finally
torn down yesterday.

Even though we expected this, and knew it was coming.

It was still quite shocking to see it actually happening.

Notice the good amount of "PennDoting" going on in this pic.

It's not like we ever purchased a car there, so we're not sure why
we got a little verklempt.

Maybe we were just being a little nostalgic, as the even older J-C
building downtown seems to be being taken down as well.

It's nice to see the Newk moving forward.

Not much to report around here, other than the fact
that it's Avett Brothers Week here in the Newk.

You may be saying to yourself...
"The Avett Brothers... did they graduate in 96 from Valley?"

Short answer: No.

Many of you likely have not heard of the Avett Bros, but that's
okay, because we are taking this week over, and introducing
them and their fine music to you.

Why would we do that?

Because, they are in Pittsburgh this Friday night, and we
will be there.

And because we want to.

And because we like forcing things we like on people we like,
because we know we have great taste in just about everything.


For those of you familiar with the Avetts, enjoy.

For those of you new to them, sit back and let the love
wash over you.

Last Post Ever

Seeing as we don't post on Saturdays.
(Where have you been, Angry Rich?)

This might be the last post we ever make.

Because, according to some people, the world is going to
end tomorrow.


Some big earthquake is supposed to hit, and all of mankind
will perish.

These predictions are based on some equations from the bible.

The date of May 21, 2011 may seem random, but it is based on a numerical analysis by Harold Camping, the president of Family Radio, a religious broadcaster based in California.

"According to Genesis, when the flood occurred in the year 4990, God told Noah that in seven days he would destroy the earth," Manny explained. "And he destroyed it in seven days.

"But Peter said: 'I know that one day for me is like a thousand years.' So 4990 plus 7001 years (the equivalent of seven days) equals 2011," he explained.

Not only that, May 21 coincides with the 17th day of the second month of the calendar used during the Biblical flood, according to Camping.

So, if this is the last post, we should probably reveal
our secret identities.

Truce (For Now)

As many of you regular readers already know...

We don't have many things to say about our neighbor, Oakmont.

Most of what we say is negative about those annoying ass
brick streets they seem to be so damn proud of.

See that?

We were about to go off on another tangent.

Luckily, we caught ourselves before it got too ugly.


Now, we just found out the schedule for one of the best summer
events this side of the Burgh.

It's the Oaks Theater 9th annual Moonlit Matinee Film Fest!

And this year there are some very good selections.

All of the movies in the festival play on both Friday and
Saturday nights.

Fridays @ 10pm

We dig the Oaks Theater.

You just might too.

(Other than the fact that it's located on the mother of
all annoying brick roads.)

Pay To Play?

So it's being tossed around by the New Ken/Arnold school
board to charge sports players (as well as other extracurricular
activities such as band and drama club) to participate.

Seems they are finding it hard to close a rather large gap
in next years budget.

The gap?

Only 4.7 million dollars.

Wait, come again...

That's a rather large "gap."

Now, other than making people pay to play, they are considering
these likely options:

- Turning the athletic director job into a part-time position, and
cutting $50k in salary.
- Eliminating 9th grade football and hoops.
- All assistant coaches in basketball, track, and swimming.
- Cheerleaders would have to cheer from home during most
away games.
- Cutting about 13 non-conference games.

Some of those options we like better than the others.






Being top-notch athletes, and dashingly handsome, the news
of sports taking a hit like this, peeves us greatly.

We'll just have to go look in a mirror, and cheer up at the site
of our gorgeous poonams.
