Busted

Over this past weekend, there was a little more than
New Ken Community Days going on.

Yeah, and we aren't talking about that little Lower Burrell
thing they put on during the same weekend.

What was up with that, anyways?

We digress.

The other big news this weekend was a major drug
roundup, that netted around 40 accused drug dealers.

Mostly in Tarentum, East Deer, Harrison, and Brackenridge.
(But we saw at least 1 Newker in the fine print. As well as
Upper Burrell, Arnold, and even an Oakmonter.)

Now look, we are all for making a living in these tough
economic times.

We respect people with a go-getter attitude.

But selling H, and crack, and pills around here just
pisses us off.

Seriously though, we're all adults, and we know that drugs
is a huge problem in this country.

We can't just expect our area to be exempt from this.
We are many things, but naive isn't one of them.

So seeing another roundup of this size bums us out, but
also gives us hope that things can change.

They might not...

But hey, they might.

Keep hope alive.

~

On a side note.

We rented the movie:
She's Out Of My League

It was filmed in Pittsburgh, and we must admit,
it was quite humorous.

We normally don't "endorse" things, but hey,
it's only a movie right?

And It Begins

Today is the start of New Kensington Community Days.

Now listen up.

This event is tonight through Sunday at Memorial Park
right here in the Newk.

This benefits many organizations, but the biggest
is the local volunteer fire departments.

They need your help, so get down there.

Yeah, we aren't asking.

~

Now that that's done, check this out...

Last week we talked about the moon like surface of the
Valley high track.

We checked our email this morning, and found this awesome
piece of artwork:

Haha!

How great is that?

Thanks for making us laugh.

it's going to be friggin' beautiful."

1 More Day!

The last couple of days, we've talked about some of the things
we love about the New Ken Community Days.

Today, we talk about the best part of it.

Is it the school bus rides?

Not a chance.

We don't ride the bus, although it is great that they provide
that for people. Free of charge, and everything.

So what is it?
The Chuck-A-Luck game?

Although we love a good game of chance... no, it isn't
the sound of quarters and broken dreams that makes
our motor rev.

I give up, there is nothing left.

You forgot one thing...

It's the people.

Especially people like Debo the Clown...

Like all of the volunteers and firefighters...

And Kenny Russell...

(He's a local treasure.)

Anyways, it's the people, that we look forward to the most.

Seeing old friends.
Meeting new ones.
Watching people laugh.
Watching them eat.
Watching them walk around.

Okay, we are sounding like creepy stalkers now.

So yeah, tomorrow is the big day, and we are sure the
weather will cooperate.

Nic would never do anything to mess with NKCD.

2 More Days

We were down at Memorial Park last evening, and
the transformation is well under way.

We got really excited as we started thinking about
some of the other stuff we can't wait to do.

And other than the fudge, we have another "must stop."

Funnel Cake and Huggies.

Seriously, this food combo ranks up there with some
of the most popular, such as:

Peanut Butter and Jelly
Burger and Fries
Mac n' Cheese
Sushi and Sake
Jager and Red Bull

Like OMG, we totally can't friggin' wait to get our food
tickets and hit the booths.

It's gonna be crazzzzzyyyyyy!!!!!!!11!!!

Why do teens these days, add a bunch of unnecessary
letters to random words?

-
Anyways...

We are hoping that the weather is good this Friday, cause
we will be there night #1.

Fo shizzle, Dizzle.

3 More Days

This weekend is New Ken Community Days.

We have decided to talk about some of the things we
here at theNewk look forward to every year.

We think this is a great idea.

Why?

Because we thought of it.
That's why.

Today, we salute you, Fudge Stand.

We visit you every year, and we are never disappointed.

You are usually the last stop we make before leaving, as
there is no butter way to say goodbye.

We prefer your chocolate and nut fudges.

There are rumors swirling that we cry into the leftover
wax paper, after all the fudge has been devoured.

That rumor couldn't be more true.

Wax paper is surprisingly absorbent.

-

So, be sure to make a stop at the fudge stand.

Actually, there are usually two fudge stands.
How awesome is that?

Just be sure to leave us some chocolate walnut.

Thanks.

(Yeah, we meant to say butter.)

Keeping Hope Alive

So yeah, we didn't get any emails about our friend's
earring yesterday, which is a bummer.

But we still hold out hope that someone out there
found it, and will help us out.

(Did we seriously just use the word "out" 3 times
in that last sentence?)

If you have no idea what we're talking about, sorry,
you need to get in the loop.

~

Also, we can't stand Kobe Bryant.

Ugh.

Watching his fake over-excitement makes us dislike
the NBA even more than we thought possible.

And what the hell is up with Jerry Buss' voice.

Good lord.

If it wasn't for Phil Jackson, we would have cut ourselves
last night.

~

Sorry for the short post, but we have stuff to do.

Check out the rest of this week's posts if you want
to be entertained.

Lost And Hopefully Found

We told you about our trip to the Valley track
on Tuesday night.

We found out something last night, about that night,
and we could use your help.

We are taking a total shot in the dark here, but a
great friend of ours lost an earring.

And if one of our readers happened to find it, it
would be so awesome if they could contact us via
email and let us know.

If you didn't already know...
thenewkblog@gmail.com

Here is a picture of the opposite one.
(Not the evil version of this one, but it's partner.)

It is white gold with a bunch of small diamonds.

We went down last night and did a few miles with our
eyes glued to the track, but no luck.

This isn't a call to arms for all you klepto's out there.

~

Moving on.

We wanted to remind you of a great event going on this
Saturday.

So please click this link and read our article.

-FBR New Kensington Golf Event-

This is a great event, and we'd love if you attended.

Head on over this Saturday.

What's the worst that can happen?

You play golf, have Glen's custard, and help a great cause.

This Track Is Made For Walkin'

Tonight we went and did something we don't
get to do nearly often enough.

We went walking down at the Valley track.

After all that delicious Mexican food we ate on
Sunday, some exercise was necessary.

So as we walked around the 1/4 mile oval, we noticed
how many other folks enjoyed this as well.

There really were a bunch of people out there.

There could be many reasons for this, but we think that
the quality of the track surface surely has something
to do with it.

See, back in our high school days, the surface of the track
was not so great.

It was a black tar like surface, with a bunch of cracks
and mounds and whatnot.

You really had to pay attention while you walked, as a
wrong step could have landed you in Citizen's General.

But a few years back, they put this sweet new surface on
there, and it's a bad mother now a days.

It's like they glued all these little red jelly beans to it, and
it feels kinda spongy when you walk on it.

Much like we imagine the moon feels like.

We think you all should head down there on some of these
nice evenings, for a few laps around this centerpiece.

You might even see us chugging along.

Food, Friends, And A Phone

Our good friend George Gatto took us to a
new area restaurant a couple weeks back for lunch.

We didn't tell you about it.

Not cause we didn't want to share.

We just didn't feel like sharing.

So when we talked to David Cooper about grabbing a bite
to eat, and catching up a little, I told him about this
hot new local spot.

Rey Aztec
(In the Kmart plaza)

It's real deal Mexican food.

How much did we just sound like Guy Fieri right there?

Anyways, David Cooper and I met for an early dinner.

Not cause we're old...

Okay, maybe it's cause we're old.
(I guess it's just a matter of perspective.)

Moving on.

We grabbed a booth and began reading the little cheat-sheet
on the condiment rack, that explains the differences between
chalupas, burritos, tamales, etc.

While we figured out what the heck we were ordering,
we munched on their fresh chips and salsa.

We are still partial to Stella's nachos and cheese, but whatev.

Now, this wasn't a formal Newk review, but Cooper is always
thinking of you all, and brought his camera with him.

After a small discussion, we decided that since we didn't let
them know ahead of time that we would be taking photos
and whatnot, we nixed the idea.

We have more respect than that.

But that did not stop me from turning my new phone
over to David, to try out the new Newk-Cam.

Here are a couple of his shots...

Seriously, he took those pictures with my phone.

MY PHONE!

He's a photographic beast.
(Check him out at davidcooperphoto.com)

So yeah, we ate every bit of food they placed in front of us.

Everything was very good.

Way better than our only other Mexican food option
in the area... Taco Bell.

We would totally be down for going back and doing a
full on Newk review.

How does tomorrow sound, Rey?

Congratulations, Graduates!

As we drove by the high school this evening, we
noticed an extraordinary amount of cars in the Valley
High parking lot.

We thought maybe one of those karate tournaments
were in town.

But we remembered that those usually
take place
on a Saturday.

The more we rubber-necked, we started to see some
young adults wearing black and gold caps and gowns.

We started beeping the horn, as if to say...

"Hey, we realized you all just graduated from
high school. It's one of the biggest days in your life.
And we are going to get you something awesome.
A random horn honk, from a random car.
Do you likey?"

So yeah, we felt pretty good about our generous gift to the
Viking class of 2010.

Best of luck to every one of you, in all you do.
(Especially you, Cristina.)

~
Also, the answer to yesterday's game is...

Thanks to all that played along.

We'll Take It

This is a website for the people, by the people.

Without you, we would not be here.

And every now and again, we need to ask you
for your help.

No, we don't need help moving, so stop thinking up excuses.

We need you to keep telling us about great local events,
businesses and anything else positive about our
beloved area.

Send us pictures.
Send us emails.
Send us money.
Send us your daughters.

We need it all.

We also need you to send us some new fans on our
facebook page.

It's easy.

- Go to our page.
- Look for our red picture in the upper left.
- Under that picture, click on "Suggest to Friends."
- Also, if you scroll down that same side of the page, you
will see a gray button under our events, that says
"Share."

Thank you.

Congrats Lady Vikings

We just got word that the Lady Vikings softball
team just completed a perfect season, by defeating
Burrell in the 12th inning by a score of 5-4 in the
WPIAL Class AA Championship.

(At 10:30 on a school night, mind you.)

We don't have the exact details, but even if we
did, we'd probably get them wrong.

As the Keystone Lights were flowing like cheap beer,
after our hockey team recorded it's 3rd victory of the
season this evening.

So it's on to state for the Lady Vikes.

We would like to formally wish them well.

And maybe we can get an autographed ball or something?

Maybe one of them reads our blog?

We will soon find out.

Also, congrats to Burrell on a great run.

You gals have nothing to be ashamed of.

And just for you, we made Nic wear a baby blue v-neck
tshirt under his suit, for this week's weather forecast.

To Da Moon, Apollo

After 40 straight years, the Apollo Moon
Landing Celebration will take a year off.

It's not that they wanted to.

They just have nowhere to hold the event.

See, Owens Field in Apollo is getting some big
3 million dollar upgrade, and that is the normal
spot for the festival.

It seems that's not the only upgrade the fine folk
in Apollo are getting.

Their sewer system is also being upgraded, as
the other possible location is located where that
work is being done.

Seeing that there are no other big fields in Apollo...

Wait.

Isn't Apollo full of big fields and pastures?

Are you telling us that they seriously can't find some
cow-pie ridden lawn to set up some carnival rides,
food vendors, and fireworks display?

C'mon now people.

Don't you realize this is the friggin' Apollo Moon
Landing we're talking about?!?

The only other event this important is the
Catalina Wine Mixer.

"POW POW"

So what will Apollo Volunteer Hose Company #2
do to make up the lost funds?

They will continue with their weekly bingo games, and
also do some pancake breakfasts and other events.

We all have our fingers crossed that the Moon Landing
Celebration will return next year.

Cause damn it, we wanna play Cow Pie Bingo.
